Monte Carlo

Picture a lush, bright green carpet rolling across the floor of your aquarium — perfectly even, impossibly vivid, with tiny round leaves that catch every ray of light. That's Monte Carlo. Beloved by aquascapers worldwide, this South American gem is the go-to choice for creating the classic natural carpet look without the demanding care requirements of its close cousin, HC Cuba.

Plant Highlights

  • Scientific Name: Micranthemum tweediei
  • Origin: Argentina
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
  • Placement: Foreground / carpeting
  • Light Requirements: Medium to high
  • CO₂: Recommended for best carpeting results
  • Difficulty: Easy to intermediate
  • PH: acidic to neutral is best, but we have grown it in a pH of 8

Care Tips

Monte Carlo thrives in medium to high lighting and grows significantly faster with CO₂ injection, though it can carpet without it given enough light. Plant small tissue-culture or trimmed portions directly into a nutrient-rich substrate, pressing the roots down firmly. Keep temperatures between 68–77°F (20–25°C) and maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH for optimal growth. Trim regularly to keep the carpet dense and prevent it from floating up.

Aquascape Use

Monte Carlo is the definitive foreground carpeting plant, creating a seamless green lawn that anchors any aquascape style — from minimalist Iwagumi layouts to lush Nature Aquarium designs. Its small, rounded leaves stay compact even without trimming, making it far easier to manage than many other carpet species. Pair it with hardscape like stones or driftwood to make the carpet truly pop.
