Staurogyne Repens

Compact, resilient, and strikingly lush — Staurogyne repens has earned its place as one of the most popular foreground plants in the planted aquarium hobby. Unlike many carpeting plants, S. repens doesn't demand intense light or CO₂ to look its best, making it the perfect choice for aquascapers of all experience levels. Once established, it spreads steadily across your substrate, forming a rich, textured green mat that breathes life into any layout.

Plant Highlights

  • Scientific Name: Staurogyne repens
  • Origin: Rio Cristalino, Brazil
  • Growth Rate: Moderate
  • Placement: Foreground to mid-ground
  • Light Requirements: Low to high
  • CO₂: Optional — beneficial but not required
  • Difficulty: Easy

Care Tips

Plant individual stems directly into the substrate, spaced slightly apart to allow for lateral spreading. S. repens adapts to a wide range of water parameters and tolerates temperatures between 68–82°F (20–28°C). While it grows happily under low-tech conditions, adding CO₂ and fertilization will reward you with noticeably faster, denser growth and deeper green coloration. Trim periodically to encourage bushy, compact growth and prevent stems from rising too tall.

Aquascape Use

S. repens shines as a foreground accent or low mid-ground filler, adding a rich, three-dimensional texture that contrasts beautifully with fine-leafed carpeting plants like Monte Carlo or Dwarf Hairgrass. Its sturdy, upright stems hold their shape well even in moderate flow, and its natural, slightly irregular growth adds organic character to any scape — from Dutch-style layouts to contemporary Nature Aquarium designs.
